Their newest product, the Comet L3D, uses a blue LED light rather than a white light or laser. This allows the 3D scanning device to be much smaller than previous models that used halogen light because it doesn’t emit as much heat. Since this device has to be extremely stable in order to capture high-resolution images, heat reduction was very important to the company as they were developing this product.

It can be used in a variety of ways like being mounted on a measurement arm or a tripod. To scan small items, you’ll likely use a rotating plate to make the process easier. The measurement arm is preferable for scanning in much larger items.

This 3D scanning device comes with 6 interchangeable lenses including 45, 75, 100, 250, 500, and 800 mm FOV. Likewise, it is capable of up to 18 micron point spacing and features 5 million points per scan. That’s seriously impressive, especially considering just how portable this device is. You can take it almost anywhere and it’s so accurate you won’t need any other equipment. It only weighs 15 pounds so it’s easy to pack up and take on the go. Additionally, if you only wish to scan in small items, you can just take out the rotary table and get started immediately. There’s virtually no set up here and the process can be completely automated.

The blue LED tech works on many different surfaces, so you don’t have to fiddle with paint or dust to capture dark or shiny surfaces. It also works very quickly so you can set up and complete the 3D scanning process in a matter of minutes.

Previously, people would have to spend countless hours manually capturing data from a three-dimensional object to create a CAD model but now people only have to pull out this device, turn it on, and let it work its magic. That’s definitely something pretty special when you get right down to it. It’s with technology like this that people can save time and money on the scanning process and instead focus on the actual creation of new designs.
